Tallinn TV Tower

Tallinn TV tower is the highest building in Estonia. It was constructed between 1975–1980 as a part of a large building programme for the Moscow Olympic Games sailing regatta held in Tallinn. A decade later the TV Tower became a symbol of Estonia’s regained independence as it was defended by local activists who were besieged there by Soviet soldiers.

In 2009, KOKO architects won the competition for the renovation of the tower. Before, most of the tower, apart from the restaurant floor, was closed to the public. The new design set out to create an entertainment and leisure centre. One of the most significant changes was made by redesigning the main entrance. The old canopy and pools were replaced by a modern entrance with slanted surfaces where the museum exhibition also starts.

The image of interiors both on the lower floors as well as the restaurant and exhibition floors high up the tower was redesigned. The interior design is inspired by the 1960s and 1970s science fiction aesthetic. The modern colour and lighting solutions along with  the special designs of the furnishings create a feeling of being in a time capsule. The restaurant floor design is focused on the comfort of the guests and allows them to fully enjoy the vistas of Tallinn and its surroundings. On the exhibition floor visitors can individually interact with robots with touch screens and motion sensors.

KOKO architects have converted Tallinn TV Tower from a Soviet era techno-structure into a modern entertainment centre. The restaurant, cinema and the exhibition spaces invite visitors to spend a stimulating and enjoyable day in the TV tower confronted by the spectacular views of Tallinn.
