The satellite conference of the Tallinn Architecture Biennale 2024, “Resources for the Future”, titled “Present(ing) resources”, highlights successful projects in spatial design and material circularity while exploring visions for addressing Tallinn’s vacant or deteriorating building stock. European theorists and practitioners in architecture are invited to present their ideas during the panel discussion. The seminar will be moderated by sustainable living environment expert Tõnis Arjus. Watch the conference presentations here.

Kristiaan Borret (Chief Architect of Brussels)
“Reuse in Brussels: from pioneering to mainstreaming”
Kristiaan Borret, the Chief Architect (Bouwmeester) of the Brussels region, has contributed to interdisciplinary research on contemporary cities and public spaces and has played a key role in various urban projects in Belgium, the Netherlands, and France.
Erlend Seilskjær (FutureBuilt)
“Old is the new black”
FutureBuilt is a collaboration initiated by six Norwegian municipalities aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of the built environment. Through this initiative, 100 buildings are being designed and constructed with at least 50% lower carbon emissions than the national average. Among the 71 completed projects, a significant emphasis is placed on circular economy principles, low-carbon material selection, and sustainable mobility planning.

Juliane Greb (architect, Büro Juliane Greb)
“Open for Maintenance”
Büro Juliane Greb is dedicated to anti-exclusive architecture that is accessible socially, physically, and emotionally. In 2023, the studio curated the German Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale. The “Open for Maintenance” concept initiated discussions about existing building stock, sustainability, and resource conservation from historical and social perspectives.

Laurens Bekemans, co-founder of BC Architects, Materials & Studies, will showcase the studio’s projects and discuss how local government support enables the realization of experimental projects in Belgium.

Roland Reemaa (architect LLRRLLRR, lector EKA, London Central Saint Martins)
“Puntras / Entanged”
Roland Reemaa co-founded LLRRLLRR Studio with Laura Linsi in 2018. Their design, research, and academic work focus on material-based methods and construction techniques, locality, and reimagining existing structures.

Conference Construction 2025+: “New or Old”

The conference will explore the roles of policy, innovation, and architecture in shaping the future. Together with experts, we will share experiences, spark discussions, and seek solutions.
