COFFEE MORNING: Construction Waste
November 15th 2024, 10:00-12:00
📍Creative Hub, Traforoom, Kursi 3
During the coffee morning, the potential of reuse of construction waste in Estonia will be discussed. Görel Gauding from the Ministry of Climate and Elina Lumiste and Britta Retel from Sorainen are at the table as experts. We will discuss why and what kind of waste is generated on construction and demolition sites, what solutions could be provided legislatively by the Construction Products Regulation, and what solutions will be brought by the new waste reform, which will come into effect next year. Kofvihommik is a discussion group on a narrower topic in a free format, where we invite participants to develop a lively discussion with experts.
EXPERTS:
Görel Grauding
Ministry of Climate, specialist in waste management
Görel Grauding deals with matters related to metal waste, wood waste and construction and demolition waste, as well as coordination of topics related to waste permits, registrations and waste reports. Construction and demolition waste, Waste Management Act.

SEMINAR: Sustainable Development of Krulli Quarter
November 20th 2024, 13.00-17:30
📍Krulli Quarter
The central vision of the Krull quarter development project is to design a sustainable modern quarter. To achieve this goal, the developer has brought together several parties to promote the principles of circular material use and to find the best solutions in both reconstructed and new buildings, where, among other things, various methods of recycling materials and structural elements are studied and tested on a larger scale. In the coming years, several architectural competitions await, offering specialists in the field the opportunity to participate in the creation of innovative solutions. Ole Storjohann (author of the Krull quarter concept, Cobe architects):
“We are trying to get to the point of remain or explain. It is not necessary to justify why something is kept, but when something is not kept. It doesn’t matter if it’s a tree, a lake or an industrial estate.”
Program:
Indrek Hääl (Project manager)
Introduction to Krulli Quarter’s development vision.
Ole Storjohann (architect, Cobe)
Planning the Krulli Quarter: Circular use concepts and implementation challenges.
Karin Bachmann & Juhan Teppart (KINO Landscape Architects)
The Krulli project and KINO architects’ experiences with using secondary construction materials in landscape architecture.
Tõnis Arjus, Sven Anton, and Ingrid Viskus
Tõnis Arjus (Miltton) introduces the Linnamaardla project initiated in collaboration with TalTech. Sven Anton discusses the development of a web platform for mapping construction materials as part of Linnamaardla. Ingrid Viskus (KOKO Architects) presents research on the reuse potential of building elements in the Krulli main building project.

Coffee Morning: Experience from Implementing the TAB 2024 Installation “No Time To Waste”
December 6th 2024, 10:00-12:00
📍Creative Hub, Traforoom, Kursi 3
- Ruuben Rekkor, Gregor Jürna (Project leads and builders of “No Time To Waste”)
- Indrek Peil (Architect, KAVAKAVA)
- Ann Kristiin Entson (Architect, Tallinn Urban Environment and Public Space Department)
The CAA II coffee morning focuses on practical experiences in circular construction. The discussion highlights the pavilion “No Time To Waste”, completed in the autumn of 2024 at Balti Jaam (Baltic Station), created in collaboration between TAB and the City of Tallinn by Elisabeth Terrisse de Botton and Matthieu Brasebin. Designed from secondary materials, the pavilion was selected from over 80 proposals in a competition, offering resource-efficient and adaptive solutions for creating a public shelter, and setting a new precedent for commissioning public spaces.
The project’s implementation involved numerous exciting challenges: designing with materials of unknown origin, sourcing materials from rural and urban areas, creating a construction project, and performing engineering calculations. During the coffee morning, project leads and builders Gregor Jürna and Ruuben Rekkor will share their experiences and discuss the evolving role of architects. Additionally, jury members Indrek Peil (Architect, KAVAKAVA) and Ann Kristiin Entson (Architect, Tallinn Urban Environment and Public Space Department) will provide a brief overview of the jury process and the selection of the winning proposal.

📍Creative Hub, Traforoom/ online
This seminar focuses on the reuse and circularity of construction materials, offering insights into practical tools, innovative solutions, and international experiences. Topics include how deconstruction audits in the UK help architects create a new library of materials and enhance reuse potential before demolition, examples of preserving material flows in large-scale architectural projects, and how platforms and systems enable transparency in material circulation and value chain tracking. The role of architects in developing these systems is also discussed.
