Kadri-Ann Kertsmik (Architect, Lecturer; TalTech, RKAS)
Kadri-Ann Kertsmik is an architect and an expert in assessing the carbon footprint of buildings at RKAS. She is also a member of TalTech’s carbon footprint calculation task force. Starting December 2025, all new buildings in Estonia with a floor area of over 1,000 m² will be required to submit their carbon footprint values alongside building permit applications. Plans are underway to extend this requirement to renovated buildings as well. These regulations are derived from the European Union’s EPBD Directive. Additionally, an increasing number of architectural competition requirements in Estonia and Scandinavia now include the obligation to calculate a building’s carbon footprint and the ability to integrate expertise in this area during project development. This course introduces architects to methods, tools, and data sources for assessing a building’s carbon footprint. It covers Estonia’s developed calculation methodology, the national materials database, and case studies showcasing different types of buildings.
